HAAS SUITE FOR OBOE AND PIANO, OPUS 17
Poignant, powerful, and deeply expressive, the Suite for Oboe and Piano is a striking work from one of the most gifted Czech composers of the early 20th century. This Ludwig Masters edition brings to life the music of Pavel Haas (1899–1944), whose artistic voice was tragically silenced during the Second World War.
Closely associated with Brnem and the Janáček tradition, Haas spent most of his life in Moravia, with brief periods abroad and his final years in the Terezín concentration camp. Despite immense historical hardship, his music reflects a vivid blend of lyricism, intensity, and distinctly Moravian colour.
The composition was written from July 18, 1939, to October 26, 1939, at the onset of the Second World War. From the manuscript we can see how bitterly the composer reacted to current events. The suite captivates with the depth of its subject and its highly artistic rendering.
The Suite for oboe and piano is both emotionally compelling and beautifully crafted, offering moments of lyrical introspection alongside more driving, expressive writing. Edited by František Suchý, this edition is an important addition to the oboe repertoire - a work that combines historical significance with profound musical depth.
