Completed on December 12th, 1936 - just three days before its scheduled premiere at Wigmore Hall in London by Natalie Caine and Adolph Hallis - the work was composed under extraordinary time pressure, yet reveals striking structural clarity and expressive depth.

Though regarded as one of Britten’s strongest early compositions and met with favourable remarks from the composer following its debut, it was, somewhat inexplicably, not performed again during his lifetime.
