Dramatic, atmospheric, and strikingly inventive, Benjamin Britten’s Temporal Variations for Oboe and String Orchestrareveals one of the composer’s most compelling early voices in a vivid orchestral setting.

Originally completed on December 12th, 1936 - just days before its scheduled Wigmore Hall premiere in London - the music was written for oboist Natalie Caine and pianist Adolph Hallis. In this version for oboe and string orchestra, the work’s stark contrasts and shifting colours are expanded into a rich, chamber-orchestral texture that heightens its expressive intensity.

Although highly regarded at the time of its premiere and praised by Britten himself, the work curiously received no further performances during his lifetime. Today, it stands as a remarkable and imaginative contribution to the oboe repertoire, combining taut structural writing with moments of haunting lyricism and dramatic tension.

Please note: this publication is a score only and does not include the separate oboe solo part.
